Most linebackers want to blitz every play. But if he runs through and doesn't make the play, he is going to get his butt chewed out. We can't stand him making bad decisions, but by being on the line of scrimmage, he confuses a lot of blocking schemes. These are the alignments we used. Our defensive end plays a wide 9 technique and has a 7-gap responsibility. The defensive end to the split end lines up in a wide 5 technique and has a 5-gap responsibility. All four linemen key the ball. We want them to get up as close to the line as they can.

The reason we started working at six in the morning was because of the players' academic requirements. We could have worked at night, but we felt the morning was better. It makes the players get up. Also, we have a lot of kids that play other sports, and this time doesn't interfere with their practice time. I have one kid that will be a starter on the baseball team as a freshman. We have six kids that run on the track team. They go through our off-season program in the mornings and the track practice in the afternoon.

He was not a great player. I am not saying that to get any credit for his success. Deion earned what he got. He is not the most-talented guy around; he is the hardest-working guy around. That is saying a lot, because we have had some great players over the years. Hard work is the key to success. I remember that back when I was at Alabama, I was not a great player. was one of the guys who was average that Coach Bryant took and made think he was a great player. Coach Bryant had that knack. I thought I was great, and because of that I played better than I should have.
